14 years after the Obama administration ordered NYC Fire Department to hire applicants who failed a “racist” written test on firefighting, a 53-year-old man named Ashiq Hussain fell to his death because a NYC firefighter did not properly follow the instructions for using a ladder.

In 2011, the Obama administration ordered the New York City Fire Department to hire applicants who had failed a written test on firefighting, under the false claim that it was “racist” to require firefighters to know how to read.

In 2025, a 53-year-old man named Ashiq Hussain, who was climbing out of a burning building, died because a New York City firefighter did not properly follow the instructions on how to use a ladder.

Here’s a video of the ladder collapsing while Hussain was on it. He died as a result.

HORROR IN NYC: FDNY probes fatal ladder failure in Brooklyn fire rescue. Ashiq Hussain (53) Pakistani immigrant, fell from a 2nd floor window while escaping a fire on Monday. Here’s a news article about it.

It is extremely easy to pass the New York City Fire Department’s written test.

The test is multiple choice.

And it’s open book.

And the questions are insultingly easy – here are three examples of actual questions from the test:

A group of firefighters and their officer respond to a fifth floor apartment in a seven-story building. When they arrive at the apartment, they are told that the contents of a wastepaper basket was on fire, and the fire was extinguished prior to their arrival. The officer instructs the firefighters to ventilate, or remove, the smoke from the apartment by first using a method that will not cause damage to property. Which one of the following would be the most appropriate method for the firefighters to use to remove the smoke?

A) Breaking out all the windows with a crowbar.
B) Pulling down the ceiling with a six-foot hook.
C) Cutting through the floors with an eight-pound axe.
D) Manually opening all the windows and removing the screen.

Firefighters are required to operate on the subway tracks during emergencies in the subway stations. Which one of the following would present the greatest threat to the safety of a firefighter working on the subway tracks?

A) A subway platform crowded with people.
B) Rubbish burning in a small garbage can located on a subway platform.
C) A subway car entering a station.
D) A maintenance crew working on the track.

Firefighters conduct building inspections to locate potential life-threatening conditions in the even there is a fire. Which one of the following would the most-serious threat to life in the event of a fire?

A) An unlocked front door in a building.
B) A locked basement door in a building.
C) A car in the driveway of a building.
D) A building with a missing fire escape.

The Obama administration falsely claimed that the above questions were “racist.”

The Obama administration then ordered the New York City Fire Department to hire firefighters who only scored 30% on that test.

Instructions for properly using a ladder include, but are not limited to:

Properly setting up the ladder.

Properly securing the ladder so it stays extended and doesn’t collapse.

Not exceeding the ladder’s weight limit.

Caring for the ladder by doing proper maintenance.

Inspecting the ladder to see if it needs to be replaced.

And there are others things too.

Ashiq Hussain died because a New York City firefighter did not properly follow those instructions.

Reading is important.

Requiring people to know how to read so they can do their job properly is not “racist.”

I support hiring people who are qualified for the job.

People who are not qualified for the job should not be hired to do the job.

There is nothing “racist” about requiring firefighters to be able to read and pass a written test on how to fight fires.

While I think it is highly likely that human error played a role in that ladder’s collapse. Nothing in the material linked to shows that it did.

You meet your new partner at the Fire department. You can not tell if they are a male or female, but they did not offer their pronouns. How do you proceed?
