A stray dog survived a 45-minute coyote attack earlier this month in Orange County, fending off at least five coyotes that circled it in a residential neighborhood.
An incredible video posted on Nextdoor and shared with KTLA showed the dog fighting off the coyotes in the driveway of a home in Brea on May 6.
The homeowner said it happened around 5:40 a.m. on Huntley Circle near the 57 freeway.
The video shows several coyotes surrounding and attacking a young Labrador/German shepherd mix that was roaming the neighborhood without a collar. The homeowners were unaware of the battle unfolding on their driveway until it was over, since the dog only barked a couple of times.

When I lived on the farm, dogs did it all the time....
Was this a chihuahua or something? What am I missing?
If I could have adopted that dog, I would name him
Jackie Chan!
Most those coyotes were limited to cosplaying Kabuki roles.
They don’t get a name of their own.
Coyotes play with dogs as part of their feed frenzy. A Coyotes will sometimes play with a dog to entice it ti the pack so they can attack and dine.
“playful”
Wild canids routinely kill other canids when they have enough numbers to mount an attack. This is about a predators’ territory.

out west maybe part Chihuahua???
Good to hear!
I have two cats and while I feel crappy for imprisoning them in my home I don’t dare let them out because we have coyotes in our area occasionally as well:/ I’ve been looking at outdoor cat enclosures, but then I don’t want to set it up where anytime we open the door the cat thinks it’s fine to go outside and then escapes.
Might be a coywolf
The dog looks like a puppy or not much older.
Housing development in southern California have shrunk the area of coyotes and their predators, and it seems their predators have lost more than the coyotes as the coyotes have seemed more numerous as the years have passed. In southern California when I was growing up, we never once saw a coyote in our area. Now they are common in that area, and quite known to attack humans domesticated animals.
Looks like the scene at a typical urban & city street corner, school, mall, or church...
Unfortunately, Calvin, my Siamese cat (named for our 30th president) was always an outdoor cat and didn’t like being indoors. Tasha, my previous cat, a calico, lived her whole life indoors and died at 18 on Election Day 2016. Sister, a black community cat, lived in our neighborhood for years until a coyote found her. I am currently feeding a Siamese community cat, but I can’t get close to him, so I haven’t given him a name.
The dog owner was urgently trying to convince the dog to come back.
A few seconds later, the dog was upside down, six feet off the ground.

Here’s a short video of the dog (now Duke) and his adopter.

Not playful. That’s how they attack. Nips and bites until they disable and then they rush in as a pack. Noticed that no one suggested that they shoot the things on sight.
Normal size.
Yes. They didn’t fight.
I’m not sure they were being friendly, but there was no attack or fight.
"While the dog was in the driveway, you can see that the coyotes were maneuvering to get behind him. He was at a fatal disadvantage at that point. But when he got to a point where he had something solid at his back and could keep them in front of him they gave up."
It is good to know that there are still some decent people in the world. ;-)
